Position:           Literacy Coach

                        Kennedy-Longfellow School

The Literacy Coach will work collaboratively with teachers to provide instructional support, feedback and pedagogical content knowledge and planning for literacy instruction. This position has the following major areas of responsibility: 

  • Support and champion the implementation of the new ELA Curriculum, CKLA
  • Support a Multi-tiered system of support, with a focus on Tier 1 and Tier 2
  • Analyze and utilize data to monitor student progress and to coordinate instruction.
  • Oversee and organize assessment training for teachers, assessment scheduling, implementation and reporting, including administering assessment. 
  • Participate in school leadership teams (instructional leadership team, literacy leadership team, PLCs).  
  • Meet regularly with building administration to establish and maintain a shared vision for coaching, collaboration, and implementation of the literacy framework.
  • Attend and participate actively in professional development sessions provided by the English Language Arts Department.
  • Receive coaching and support visits from district Lead Teachers.
  • Actively participate in curriculum implementation and alignment.
  • Guide the purchasing, distribution, organization and use of books and materials for classrooms and professional development.
  • Provide resources to parents to help them understand how to support their students at home.
  • Perform lesson observations, providing specific and actionable feedback for improvement. 
  • Provide recommendations for school-wide professional development based on the instructional needs of teachers 
  • Other duties, as assigned by the principal or assistant principal, including morning and afternoon supervision

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming Literacy Coach, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications: 

  • A commitment to anti-racism and culturally responsive practices. 
  • A deep understanding of culturally and linguistically sustaining practices
  • A deep understanding of research-based literacy practices
  • Demonstrated impact on student academic outcomes
  • Previous leadership experience at the team, school, or district level
  • Four or more years of teaching experience in an elementary school with a proven track record of high achievement in the classroom 
  • 5 or more years of instructional leadership, coaching or related experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff 
  • Experience and expertise in teaching Multilingual Learners
  • Strong knowledge of Common Core/MA Curriculum Framework for ELA and Literacy
  • Master’s degree in Education from an accredited college or university required
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification as a Reading Specialist and/or Elementary Education required
