The Opportunity:
The Amigos School seeks a JK-8 Math Coach to join our caring and innovative community. The successful candidate will have experience planning, implementing, and adapting curriculum that supports proficiency in mathematical skills and the Common Core. He/she will have experience working with teachers to support pedagogical and content knowledge for mathematics teaching and learning. He/She will also have experience supporting language development through the content of mathematics.
The Mathematics Instructional Coach is a key member of the school leadership team, ensuring that our community is properly equipped to deliver world-class math instruction both in person and virtually. Moreover, she/he will be fully committed to continuously learning, improving, reflecting and working together to ensure that all students achieve at high levels.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support instruction and assessment of JK–8 mathematics aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics Standards and to Cambridge Public Schools’ district and mathematics department goals.
- Design and implement school-based professional development, and strengthen the facilitation of school-based professional learning communities.
- Facilitate school-based workshops that include the most recent research on best practices, curriculum, and assessment.
- Support various district initiatives such as curriculum development and alignment.
- Co-plan and facilitate grade, cluster and school level planning meetings.
- Develop and implement assessment instruments and guidelines for the purpose of data-based analysis of student learning and understanding.
- Analyze district math data and support school mathematics coaches in their data inquiry cycle meetings with teachers.
- Assist in gathering and providing resources to school-based coaches and teachers.
- Provide leadership in the use of instructional technology and electronic data collection tools.
- Create opportunities for community engagement.
- Represent the school in a variety of forums as requested by the principal and/or the K-12 Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator.
Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Math Coach you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
- High levels or native language proficiency in Spanish, including listening, speaking, reading, grammar and writing (required).
- 5+ years of recent, successful experience teaching mathematics and/or coaching teachers of mathematics in student-centered classrooms with inquiry-based methodologies;
- Previous and successful experience working in a multicultural environment and demonstrated implementation of culturally responsive practices that includes students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Previous experience working in dual language schools
- Proven leadership capacity and ability to work cooperatively with staff and parents.
- Experience with and ability to provide professional development to adults in math curriculum, math content, and inquiry-based instructional strategies.
- A deep level of understanding of the Common Core State Standards of Mathematics including the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
- Knowledge of national mathematics reform literature.
- Experience using authentic, performance-based math assessments.
- Experience supporting English Language Learners in the mathematics classroom and supporting students with IEP’s in the mathematics classroom.
- Evidence of strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
- Experience analyzing common core mathematics standards and identifying appropriate tools and resources for instruction.
- Familiarity with 6-8 mathematics resources including Math in Focus, Illustrative Mathematics and Investigations.
- Energy, sense of humor, commitment to teaching all children, and a belief that all children and teachers can learn.
- Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree or higher preferred.
- Massachusetts’s teacher certification/licensure in mathematics required.
